As a result of natural aging, the collagen in the facial skin may become damaged. As this happens, natural wrinkling may occur. Botox may help temporarily delay this process, giving the face a more full, youthful appearance. Contact San Jose Oral Surgery to help you regain a more youthful appearance.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is one of the most popular injectable cosmetic treatments in America today. The FDA approved Botox in 2002, and since then, millions of Americans have used it to enhance their appearance and their confidence. The serum is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum that reduces the appearance of:
- Forehead wrinkles
- “11” wrinkles between your eyebrows
- Crow’s feet around your eyes
In some cases, Botox is also used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and migraines.
HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?
Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the small facial muscles that pull your skin into creases and folds when you smile or make another facial expression. When those tiny muscles stop moving, the skin covering them relaxes and smooths out to create a more youthful and rested appearance.
Muscle contraction is a chemical process. The nerves release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the point of contact with the muscle. It is this chemical that stimulates the muscles to contract or shorten. Botox injections prevent the release of this chemical called acetylcholine, which then stops the muscles contracting.
The effects of Botox are temporary, so you will need routine treatments to maintain your wrinkle-free appearance. The effects generally last between 3 and 12 months. Eventually, the Botox injections train your muscles to stay still and relaxed, and you can go longer between your appointments.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A BOTOX TREATMENT?
Your Botox appointment should take around 20 minutes. Our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon begins by cleansing your face and applying a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort during your injections. He studies your face and marks the best places for your Botox injections. Then, using a thin needle, he injects the Botox serum into your skin around your eyes and on your forehead.
Your skin may be slightly pink after your appointment, but there’s no need to take any time off work to recover. In fact, you can even schedule your appointment during your lunch break. However, you should avoid strenuous physical activity for around 24 hours after your appointment. You should see the results of your treatment in 24-48 hours. Your skin needs time to relax once your muscles stop moving. It is unlikely that you will have to wait as long as 5 days to see the full effects take place.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE BOTOX?
You should avoid using Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients.
DOES BOTOX WORK FOR MIGRAINES?
One scientific study that looked at adults who get chronic migraine headaches found that shots of Botox cut down the total number of days they had them or even other types of headaches they had. They also had more pain-free days each month, and they reported fewer days off work.
In another study, 50% of those who took two rounds of Botox shots reported that the number of days they had a headache each month was cut in half. After five rounds of treatment, that increased to about 70% of the people.
Many health professionals think that Botox reduces migraine headaches because it blocks chemicals called neurotransmitters that carry pain signals from your brain. The nerves that carry pain signals to the brain from the neck and head are blocked before they give the signal for pain.
